Delia established the shelter in July 2016, laying the foundation for this project out of a profound desire to drive meaningful change. At home, she cares for two dogs, Bear and Nadine, both rescued from difficult circumstances, along with two male cats, Vasile and August, and a female cat named Pepsi. Her household followed a “3 people, 3 dogs, 3 cats” formula until the passing of their beloved 10-year-old dog, Titi; they plan to complete the family again when the time feels right. Within the shelter, Rafiki holds a special place in her heart due to his resemblance to Bear; she admits that if they got along, she would bring him home as the third dog the family is missing.
The experience that left the deepest mark on her was the shelter’s very first spay and neuter campaign, which she organized while eight months pregnant. Despite the challenges, it served as the catalyst for every campaign that followed. Delia is a staunch advocate for a national sterilization campaign and for legislation that mandates the sterilization of non-pedigree animals. Her ultimate hope is to retire in 15 years with the peace of mind that large-scale rescues are no longer a necessity.
